Duas for Tawaf and Sa'i

Introduction

Du'a is the soul of worship, especially in the sacred precincts where rewards are multiplied and supplications are answered. There are no specific mandatory duas designated for each circuit of Tawaf or each lap of Sa'i — the matter is broad and you may supplicate for whatever good you seek in this world and the next. However, there are authentic duas and remembrances that are recommended to learn and act upon.

Opening Du'a at the Black Stone

'Bismillah wallahu Akbar' (In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest) — this is the authentic saying at the beginning of each circuit. The pilgrim then gestures toward the Black Stone or touches and kisses it if possible, without causing harm to others.

Du'a Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone

A specific du'a has been authentically reported for this stretch of Tawaf: 'Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina adhaban-nar' (Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire). It is recommended to repeat this du'a frequently along this stretch in every circuit.

General Duas During Tawaf

You may make any supplication you wish during Tawaf. Among the best: 'Subhanallah walhamdulillah wa la ilaha illallah wallahu akbar wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' and 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-afwa wal-afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah.' Reciting the Quran is also excellent. Remember that Tawaf is a form of prayer, so dhikr, Quranic recitation, and abundant supplication are all highly encouraged.

Du'a at Safa and Marwa

Upon ascending Safa or Marwa it is Sunnah to face the Qiblah, raise the hands, and make du'a. It is Sunnah to begin the first ascent at Safa by reciting: 'Innas-Safa wal-Marwata min sha'a'irillah' (Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah). Then say the takbir three times and recite: 'La ilaha illallah wahdahu la shareeka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shay'in qadeer, la ilaha illallah wahdah, anjaza wa'dah, wa nasara abdah, wa hazamal-ahzaba wahdah.'

Du'a While Walking During Sa'i

While walking between Safa and Marwa, you may supplicate freely and make dhikr. Men are recommended to jog between the two green markers — the stretch where Hajar (Hagar), peace be upon her, ran. You may repeat during the jog: 'Rabbighfir warham, innaka antal-a'azzul-akram' (My Lord, forgive and have mercy, for You are the Most Mighty, the Most Generous).

Tips for Making the Most of Du'a Time

Memorize a number of short duas before your trip. Avoid spending too much time looking at your phone during Tawaf — instead, have your supplications ready in mind, or review them during rest periods. Sundus provides the appropriate duas for each stage in an organized and easily accessible format, so you can give your full attention to worship with focus and presence of heart.
