What is a Miqat?

A Miqat is the designated place in Islamic law where pilgrims performing Hajj or Umrah enter the state of Ihram. Each region has its own Miqat: Dhul-Hulayfah (Abyar Ali) for the people of Medina and those passing through it, Al-Juhfah (Rabigh) for the people of Syria and Egypt, Yalamlam for the people of Yemen, Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sayl al-Kabir) for the people of Najd, and Dhat Irq for the people of Iraq. Those whose homes are within the Miqat boundaries enter Ihram from their homes.

Before Reaching the Miqat

It is recommended to prepare before reaching the Miqat by: performing Ghusl (ritual bath), cleaning your body, trimming your nails, and removing hair from the usual areas. Then, put on the Ihram garments (two white pieces of cloth for men), or remain in your regular clothes if you will enter Ihram immediately after Ghusl.

Upon Reaching the Miqat

When you reach the Miqat, or before passing it if you are traveling by air: perform Ghusl if you haven't already, and put on the Ihram garments. Then pray two rak'ahs with the intention of performing the Sunnah of Ihram, if the time is not disliked. Then, intend to enter into the state of Ihram in your heart, saying: "O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah, so make it easy for me and accept it from me." Then recite the Talbiyah: "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk La Shareeka Laka Labbayk, Inna Al-Hamda Wan-Ni'mata Laka Wal-Mulk, La Shareeka Laka" (Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Indeed, all praise, grace, and dominion belong to You. You have no partner).

Prohibitions of Ihram

After entering Ihram, the following are prohibited for men: wearing sewn clothing, covering the head, cutting hair or nails, using perfume, hunting, and sexual intercourse. Women enter Ihram in their normal, modest clothing, with their face and hands uncovered, and they should avoid wearing gloves and a niqab.

Practical Tips

Make sure your Ihram garments are securely fastened before starting Tawaf to avoid embarrassment. Bring at least two clips to secure the Ihram garment.
