What to Do When You Arrive at the Miqat

What Is the Miqat?

The Miqat is the designated boundary point from which pilgrims and Umrah performers must enter the state of Ihram. Each direction has its own Miqat: Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali) for those coming from Madinah, Al-Juhfah (Rabigh) for those from Greater Syria and Egypt, Yalamlam for those from Yemen, Qarn Al-Manazil (Al-Sayl Al-Kabir) for those from Najd, and Dhat Irq for those from Iraq. Those whose homes lie within the boundaries of the Mawaqit enter Ihram from their homes.

Before Reaching the Miqat

It is recommended to prepare before reaching the Miqat by bathing thoroughly, trimming the nails, and removing hair from the usual areas. Then put on the Ihram garments (white seamless lower and upper wrap for men). You may stay in your regular clothes if you plan to enter Ihram immediately after bathing.

Upon Arriving at the Miqat

When you reach the Miqat — or just before passing it if traveling by air — bathe if you have not already done so and put on your Ihram garments. Then pray two rak'ahs with the intention of the Sunnah of Ihram, if the time is not disliked for prayer. Then make the intention in your heart saying: 'O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah, so make it easy for me and accept it from me.' Then begin the Talbiyah: 'Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk la shareeka laka labbayk, innal hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la shareeka lak.'

Prohibitions of Ihram

Once in the state of Ihram, the following are forbidden: wearing sewn clothing for men, covering the head for men, cutting hair or nails, using perfume, hunting, and intercourse. Women enter Ihram in their regular modest clothing with their faces and hands uncovered, and avoid wearing gloves or face veils.

Practical Tips

Make sure your Ihram garments are securely fastened before beginning Tawaf to avoid embarrassment. Bring at least two safety pins to keep your lower wrap in place. Remember that Ihram is not merely a garment — it is a spiritual state of detachment and turning to God. Feel the magnitude of the moment as you stand before the House of Allah.
